Dublin based artist Colette O’Connell first began painting and drawing in
Barcelona, where she attended ‘Leonardo Da Vinci’ Estudi d’Arts Plàstique
in Barcelona. Colette returned to study in Ireland, and graduated from Dun
Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology in 1999 with a BA in Fine
Art (Hons). Her work is held in both private and public collections. The work
in this exhibiton was based on research done in the Rialto area.
Artist Statement:
‘The work is paying homage to the lives and life work of a neighbourhood
that’s now in a state of transition. Premises and small businesses that
catered for local needs and beyond now lie idle. The work is a collection
of small pictures of a past made redundant by the ‘big picture’ of the present.
The work strives to convey the stillness and mood of these empty shells,
where memories are boarded up forever, lost in the inevitability of this tidal
wave that passes for progress. Sentiment won’t change anything,
but we can show our respects and acknowledge this uneasy transition.’
Gallery Hours:
10am - 6pm Monday to Saturday
