Alternative Entertainments is a multi-disciplinary arts organisation that promotes access to and
engagement in the arts through a sustained commitment to excellence and a dynamic and
innovative approach.
Alternative Entertainments strives towards raising the profile of artists and the arts and also aims
to act as an agency for change in artist development in the region.
Background
Alternative Entertainments was established in 1982 to provide a multi-disciplinary arts programme
in the Tallaght area. At the time of the organisation's inception, Tallaght had no arts or cultural profile
and the absence of arts provision was proving to be an obstacle to the development and appreciation
of local artists.
Over the last twenty-one years, the programme of arts and related services developed by
Alternative Entertainments has grown considerably. During the same period, Tallaght has acquired
a range of arts providers including two theatres, an arts office and an arts centre. This wider development
of the arts has enabled Alternative Entertainments to diversify its services and afforded the opportunity of
specialising in key areas.
From being essentially an events driven organisation funded on a project basis, Alternative Entertainments
now provides a range of support services that are accessed by artists and arts organisations. The introduction
of arts training, master-classes and information services has increased the organisations profile and reputation.
Alternative Entertainments has an ethos of inclusion and accessibility that demands that the arts is of
relevance. This is reflected in the organisation's commitment to bring arts of the highest standard into communities.
Although the organisation has achieved a great deal, creating and developing innovative projects that have
results in high standards of artistic practice and innovative practice and products, the emphasis has been
on programming and not internal development. Consequently the internal structure of the organisation has
been both under-developed and under resourced.
In order to ensure the continuance and expansion of a valuable service with high standards of practice,
the organisation has had to consolidate its internal structures. By developing a long-term strategy that
will determine it’s next phase of evolution, the organisation can secure its position within the arts sector.
The company is currently looking at this situation.
