Gabhann Dunne’s new exhibition, ‘Theckla’s Wood’, a personal narrative capturing his current research,
beliefs and relationships, opens on the 12th April and will run until 29th May 2008 in Alternative
Entertainments Gallery at the Civic Theatre, Tallaght.
Dunne’s paintings deliver their reward upon quiet reflection and while appearing straightforward
on the surface, the images are usually interwoven with subtle messages and embedded narratives.
Marked by a keen, interrogative interest in the world, Dunne has always sought to represent other
cultures. While his previous solo show looked to Korea for cultural parallels, this exhibition places
the figure in the more localised terrain of the Irish countryside.
Dunne’s awareness and interest in nature together with his concern for environmental degradation
is evident in the works. He seeks affirmation in presenting this series of works and hopes the work
will function as a point of departure for the imagination, a place from which to launch further into
verdant fantasies. The artist’s intent is to translate that elusive terrain of creativity into visual
expression. These works are intimate and discrete, encouraging you to become involved in
unravelling the mysteries and latent narratives at play. It is not surprising then, the longer
you stay with the work the greater the reward.
