Jack Pakenham was born in Dublin 1938 but has lived in the North of Ireland since 1939. He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 1959 in French, Spanish and Philosophy. He spent 1959 to 1960 writing and painting on the island of Ibiza. He taught English in a Belfast school from 1961 – 1990. Now working full time as a painter, Jack is self-taught and also a published poet.
In 1987 he was elected an Academician by the Royal Ulster Academy. Jack has exhibited his work since 1960. In that time he has had numerous solo exhibitions and has also contributed to many group exhibitions, and has received various awards and bursaries. His work has been purchased for numerous Public Collections.
Pakenham was one of a group of artists to take inspiration from the Northern Ireland troubles in the 1970's expressing horror of all paramilitary forces in his entirely personal way. This exhibition consists of large-scale paintings produced in the late eighties and nineties.
