Alternative Entertainments presents
Louis le Brocquy:
The Tain series
Celbridge Library, Co. Kildare
1s - 30th October 2009 Alternative Entertainments are delighted to present an exhibition of lithographic brush drawings from the acclaimed The Tain series by Louis le Brocquy HRHA (b. 1916). The exhibition will comprise a series of prints from this series, on loan from the Arts Council of Ireland for the month of October. In addition, the exhibition will include a major tapestry entitled Garlanded Goat, also on loan from the Arts Council. Louis le Brocquy is regarded as one of the foremost living figures in the history of Irish art. He is known primarily as a painter, but is also renowned as printmaker. He began to explore the possibilities of printmaking in the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in 1947, and lithography has remained his preferred print medium ever since. He was commissioned to illustrate Thomas Kinsella's english translation of the Tain Bo Cuailgne, the central epic from the Ulster cycle of heroic tales, published in 1969. These illustrations received critical acclaim for their originality and for their successful interaction with Kinsella's writing. The artist then went on to produce a much lauded series consisting of thirty six twelve black and white lithographic brush drawings, in a limited edition of seventy, selected from the book. This exhibition includes twenty one outstanding works from this series, including The Boy Cuchulainn Armed, The Morrigan and Cuchulainn confronting Ferdia, to name but a few. His visual interpretation of this story creates images of stark, epic beauty, drawing inspiration from sources such as primitive art, oriental art and ancient cave paintings. Highlights of the show include Army Massing, evoking a remarkable sense of drama and impending doom, and Pillow Talk, where we see Queen Medb and King Ailill of Ulster lying in bed and plotting a great invasion of Ulster, in order to carry off the great Brown Bull of Cuailnge.
